There was an article a while ago saying that Diablo 1 was reverse engineered by a small team of enthusiasts (not affiliated the company), and Blizzard has much more resources than that to pull the "remaster" off. It's just going to be very difficult to redraw stuff like they did with StarCraft, plus there're things coded around the maximum screen resolution of those years. I don't think it's true that they've lost the code, according to David Brevik's interviews.
